Frequently Asked Questions
What is an e-cig?
Electronic Cigarettes (e-cig) are a healthier and usually cheaper alternative for smokers to appease their Nicotine addiction. It is also becoming a new way to quit smoking all together.
How it works:
With electric cigarettes, there are a couple parts. How these parts work together vary from brand to brand, but mostly, you have a rechargeable battery and a cartomizer that screws into it. The cartomizer contains a filter, a heating coil, and the juice which has the flavoring and the nicotine.
What exactly is in the cartomizer?
The cartomizer is the vessel for the Juice that you screw onto the battery. The juice consists of: Nicotine, water, vegetable glycerine (or sometimes substituted by propylene glycol), and flavoring. Most cartomizers come with juice already in it, however, you can also purchase blank cartomizers (which have no juice in it) and make your own at home. A good source on how to do this can be found at: http://www.ehow.com/how_8712829_make-cartomizer-juice.html.
Where can I purchase an e-cig?
Most areas have specific tobacco or smoke shops where they can purchase various brands of e-cigs and juice refills. Also, there are some brands that sell their products online. In the other pages on this site, you will find different brands I have researched, how much they cost, user reviews, and where to get them.
What are the risks versus regular cigarettes?
As taught in health classes all over the country, cigarettes not only have nicotine and tobacco, but also hundreds or more of other toxins such as formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. Several studies have been conducted on e-cigs world wide and most have concluded the amount of toxins and nicotine in the e-cigs are equal to, and sometimes less than, the amounts in currently existing Nicotine replacements. The Boston University School of Public Health concluded the amount of carcinogens in e-cigs to be up to 1,000 times less than that of a regular cigarette. While e-cigs are not as healthy as abstinence, and some risks do still remain, the general consensus world wide is they are no worse than other Nicotine replacement solutions, and are significantly less harmful than regular cigarettes.
How much do e-cigs cost?
The price varies between different brands. The brand I use is vapor4life. To start cost me $100 (included 2 batteries, a wall charger, a USB charger, a USB pass-through to use the computer as the power source, a carrying case and a box of 5 cartomizers of my choice). After paying for the equipment, each box of 5 cartomizers is about $10. Each cartomizer is said to be about 15 cigarettes if smoked as intended, meaning you get, essentially, 4.5 packs of cigarettes for $10. Starter kits can be found for less, some are more, it varies by brand.
